Why do I need to change my coolant?
It is important to regularly check your coolant levels, top up and change the coolant if necessary. Low coolant levels can cause the engine to overheat resulting in permanent and expensive engine damage. Plus, if coolant is old or has been watered down then this can lead to corrosion in the cooling system which will result in leaks and ultimately long term engine damage.
When should you change the coolant?
Check your coolant levels on a regular basis, especially before long journeys. At least once a year get the coolant checked by a mechanic who can test the quality of the coolant in the system.
At least every two years you should drain the coolant, flush the cooling system and refill with fresh coolant. A full drain and flush is different from a simple top up and helps to protect and prolong the life of the cooling system and engine.
How is a coolant drain and flush done?
Here is a general step-by-step guide on how to drain and flush the coolant (note that the procedure will vary depending on the make and model of vehicle). Normally this would be done by a professional mechanic so if you are not confident to do this process then you should consult a mechanic.
- Make sure the engine is cold, handbrake applied and the vehicle is in park.
- Raise the front of the vehicle.
- Jack stands are placed beneath the car and lower it into position, ensuring the back wheels have chocks in place.
- You may need to remove any underbody shield.
- Place a container under the radiator and undo the drain valve (see vehicle handbook for location). Dispose of the old coolant in accordance with local and national guidelines.
- Flush the system as many times as necessary. Use a quality cooling system flush additive.
- Locate and remove the reserve tank from its holder and drain any coolant remaining, then put the tank back in place.
- Replace the drain valve.
- Refill the system to the marked levels using the correct antifreeze / coolant mixture.
What are the costs of a coolant change?
The cost of a coolant or antifreeze change will depend on the type and size of your vehicle. On average you can expect to pay between $100 and $200 for a standard coolant change.
